PTE in Australia: preparation built around the score you actually need
Individual PTE Academic coaching for skilled migrants and professionals preparing to use an English test result for Australian migration, work or another serious professional goal.
If Australia is the reason you are taking PTE, the first question should not be which template to memorise. You need to know what your pathway requires, how your current scores compare with that target and which part of the test is costing you the result.
That could mean preparing for a first attempt, fixing one weak component, recovering after a retake or deciding whether PTE is even the best test for your situation.
One Australia PTE hub. Different problems have different pages.
This is the broad starting point for PTE Academic in Australia-related pathways. It covers the test decision, preparation logic and the routes available depending on your score problem.
If your question is specifically about permanent residence, a failed test, Speaking, Writing or Superior English, you will find a dedicated page below. That keeps each topic focused instead of trying to make one page rank for every possible PTE search.
Is PTE Academic accepted for Australian visas?
Yes. PTE Academic is one of the English tests accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for relevant visa purposes.
What you need to achieve is not one universal “Australia PTE score”. The evidence required depends on the visa, the level of English being claimed and the rules that apply to your application.
Important if you are using old PTE score information
Australia changed the approved English-test scoring framework on 7 August 2025. PTE Academic kept the same name, but the score thresholds used for current visa English categories are not simply the old numbers carried forward.
If you are preparing now, check the current requirement for the English category and visa you intend to claim before setting your target score.
Which PTE page matches your Australia goal?
Your first attempt, a migration-points problem and a third unsuccessful retake should not produce the same preparation plan.

PTE retake strategyShort preparation window
For candidates with a real deadline who need to concentrate on the changes that can realistically affect the next attempt.
Intensive PTE preparationWhy some Australia-bound candidates choose PTE
PTE is a fully computer-based test. For some candidates that feels more comfortable than speaking directly to an examiner.
That preference alone does not make PTE easier. It simply means the format may suit the way you perform.
You prefer a computer-based test
Some candidates feel more consistent responding to a microphone and screen than speaking to an examiner face to face.
You like measurable practice
PTE preparation can be broken down into individual task behaviours, timing problems and repeated score patterns.
Your problem is specific
If three skills are already strong and one is below the required level, broad general-English study may not be the most efficient use of your time.
Is PTE easier than IELTS for Australia?
There is no useful universal answer. A candidate who dislikes face-to-face speaking may prefer PTE. Someone who performs naturally in a conventional interview may prefer IELTS.
Previous scores matter too. If you have already taken one test several times, the decision should be based on the pattern of those results, not on social-media claims that one exam is always easier.

If the score is not moving, find out what is actually failing
A lot of PTE preparation becomes repetitive: more mock tests, more videos, more templates, another test booking.
That makes little sense if the same component keeps producing roughly the same result.
Speaking is unstable
Look at rhythm, hesitation, pronunciation, microphone behaviour and what happens when the timer creates pressure.
PTE Speaking coachingWriting is below target
Look at grammar control, sentence construction, summarisation and the mistakes that recur across several responses.
PTE Writing correctionThe result changes too much between attempts
Large fluctuations can point to timing, concentration, exam behaviour or a preparation routine that is not stable enough.
Analyse a PTE retakeYou need a higher English category
When the target is much higher than the minimum, preparation needs to be built around the current component thresholds and your weakest result.

Many PTE candidates already use English at work
Engineers, finance professionals, healthcare workers and technology specialists may read documents, attend calls and work in English every week and still miss the PTE result they need.
Workplace fluency and test performance overlap, but they are not identical skills.
Engineers
Technical candidates often have strong comprehension but may overthink spoken responses when time pressure is added.
PTE for engineersNurses and healthcare professionals
Healthcare candidates should separate migration-test requirements from any profession-specific registration English requirements.
PTE for nursesWorking professionals
When work leaves limited study time, the preparation needs to identify what deserves attention and what does not.
Online PTE coachingYour first PTE attempt and your fourth should not be prepared the same way
First attempt
You need to understand the format, establish your score baseline and learn which tasks create the most difficulty.
The aim is not to predict failure. It is to avoid discovering obvious weaknesses for the first time on test day.
Retake
Now there is evidence. Your previous component scores, test-day experience and mock performance should shape the next plan.
Repeating the same preparation without using that information wastes one of the few useful things a failed attempt gives you.
What happens before we decide what you should practise
We first need to know why you are taking PTE and what the existing evidence says about your English.
Your Australia goal
Visa pathway, migration target, work requirement or another professional purpose.
Your current scores
Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are more useful than simply saying your English is intermediate or advanced.
The bottleneck
We look for the skill, task behaviour or test condition that is holding the result down.
The next test
Frequency and intensity make more sense after we know how much time exists and what actually needs to change.
Start with the wider Australia English pathway
Some candidates need migration English. Healthcare professionals may also have registration requirements. Others are still comparing PTE, IELTS or OET.

Common questions about PTE Academic in Australia
Is PTE Academic accepted for Australian visas?
Yes. PTE Academic is an approved English-language test for relevant Australian visa purposes. The required result depends on the visa and the English level you need to demonstrate.
What PTE score do I need for Australia?
There is no single PTE score for every Australian pathway. The target depends on the visa, English category and other purpose for which you are using the result. Score thresholds also changed for tests taken from 7 August 2025, so use current requirements rather than old score charts.
Is PTE easier than IELTS for Australia?
Not universally. PTE may suit candidates who prefer a computer-based test, while IELTS may suit candidates who perform better in its task and speaking formats. Previous scores and your deadline are often more useful than generic claims about which test is easier.
Can PTE be used for Australia PR?
PTE Academic can be used as English evidence for relevant Australian skilled-migration pathways. If permanent residence is your main goal, see the dedicated PTE for Australia PR page .
Do I still need PTE 79 for Superior English?
The old 79-in-each-component benchmark relates to PTE Academic tests taken under the scoring framework used on or before 6 August 2025. Current Superior English thresholds for newer PTE tests are different. See our updated Superior English page .
What should I do if I failed PTE?
Compare your component scores, identify which area fell short and consider whether test-day performance differed from practice. Another booking only makes sense if something in the preparation is likely to change the result.
Can I prepare for PTE online?
Yes. Coaching and preparation can take place online. The English test result itself, however, must satisfy the Australian Government’s rules for an approved test and delivery format.
Is PTE suitable for professionals who already speak English well?
Yes. Many candidates already use English at work but need help converting that ability into stable performance under PTE timing and task conditions.
What if only my Speaking or Writing score is low?
The preparation can prioritise the weak component, while still considering the integrated nature of PTE tasks. There are dedicated pages for PTE Speaking coaching and PTE Writing correction.
