If Ho Chi Minh City is on your radar (and it should definitely be!), you’ll need to pay close attention to IELTS requirements. Having helped many students through this process, I’ve put together an insider’s guide to IELTS requirements at the city’s top universities.

Foreign Trade University (FTU) has built quite a reputation for itself in economics and international relations.
They mean business when it comes to English proficiency – you’ll need an IELTS score of 6.0 for undergraduate studies, and they bump that up to 6.5 for graduate programs.
It makes sense when you consider their extensive international partnerships.
Just down the road, the University of Economics (UEH) takes a slightly different approach.
They’ve designed their programs with a bit more flexibility, typically asking for IELTS scores between 5.5 and 6.0.
What’s particularly great about UEH is their bilingual courses – perfect if you’re still building confidence in your English skills.
If you’re more interested in the tech scene, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) should be on your shortlist. They’ve set their IELTS requirement at 6.0, which helps ensure students can handle those technical lingo that make engineering, well… engineering. Some of their advanced courses might ask for a 6.5, but that’s mainly at the postgraduate level.
RMIT Vietnam stands out as something special – it’s essentially a slice of Australia right here in Vietnam. Being an international campus, they’re pretty strict about their English requirements.
Most programs want a 6.5, and some even ask for a 7.0 after all we are talking about RMIT. But don’t let that scare you – their focus on practical learning makes it worth the extra effort.
For future doctors and healthcare professionals, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMP) offers an interesting mix. While many of their programs run in Vietnamese, their growing international connections mean English proficiency matters.
You’re looking at IELTS requirements between 5.5 and 6.5, depending on your specific program.
Vietnam National University’s Ho Chi Minh City campus (VNU-HCM) deserves special mention.
As a network of specialized universities, they offer incredible variety.
Most international programs ask for an IELTS score of 6.0, though requirements can vary between faculties.
Don’t overlook some of the smaller players like Saigon International University (SIU) and Hoa Sen University.
They might not be as big, but they’ve carved out strong niches in international education.
Both typically look for IELTS scores around 6.0, and their smaller class sizes often mean more personalized attention.
Here’s something many students don’t realize at first – if your IELTS score isn’t quite there yet, you’re not automatically out of the running.
Many of these universities offer pathway programs or conditional admissions (also called conditional offers).
Think of it as a bridge to help you reach your goals rather than a roadblock.
